Structural Functions of Harmony
Arnold Schoenberg
In many ways a concentrated version of "Theory of Harmony", this was Schoenberg's last book. In the later part of the book, Schoenberg presents an uncharted method of thinking about tonality, offering a concept of measuring tonal "distance" in modulation that is strikingly simple. A small book, but not an easy read.
